Private health insurance in Costa Rica, side by side

17 plans our clients ask about, from Costa Rica-only coverage to worldwide plans, compared on what they cost and what they actually cover.

This comparison does not mean you qualify for any of these plans. Every insurer reviews your age, health history and residency before accepting you. Your first step is always finding out which plans you qualify for. Use this page as a general guide to your options and typical costs — and open each plan's full policy PDF for the real details. Rates are refreshed every January, so treat prices as a ballpark.
Household

Who needs coverage?

Loaded with our example family: two adults aged 45 and kids aged 11 and 7. Every plan has a price for this family. Change the ages to price your own household.

Compare coverage side by side

Pick up to three plans. A cheap plan with a $15,000 limit and a $1,000,000 worldwide plan are different products, so look at what's behind each price.

First step: see what you qualify for

Insurers decide who they accept after reviewing each applicant. Prices here show what plans typically cost. They don't mean a plan will accept you or that you'll get this price.

Three kinds of plan

PleniSalud covers set benefits in Costa Rica. Vital 360 adds hospital and outpatient care with real limits. International plans cover $300,000 and up, including the U.S.

Private plans sit on top of the Caja

Once you have residency, CCSS (Caja) membership is required. A private plan adds faster access and private hospitals. It doesn't replace the Caja.

Pre-existing conditions

Every plan underwrites your health history, and conditions you already have can be excluded. Declare everything when you apply.

Premiums climb with age

Rates step up at each age band and renewals can rise further. Check what a plan costs at 65 and 70, not only today.

Insurance is one piece of your move

Our clients get resources like this one for every part of their relocation: residency, areas, rentals, shipping, cars and pets. If you'd like a plan for your whole move, start with a call.
